This Sunday I made a pact with my fiance that if she saw Cloverfield with me, I’d go see 27 Dresses (more on that later). I figured that we’d do that over two weekends, but instead we did it in one afternoon. Months of hype and speculation all boiled down to 84 minutes of shaky handycam footage. After seeing what was the most effective trailer in recent memory, I was hooked on whatever Cloverfield might end up being. Turns out the general reviewing public feels that same as it’s currently sitting at a 76% freshness rating over at the Rotten Tomatoes.
The teaser for JJ Abrams’ Star Trek has been seen by various denizens of the Interweb, and descriptions of said trailer have been posted on HollywoodChicago and it’s got the Interweb talking. People who’ve been able to get into screenings of Cloverfield have witnessed it and it makes me all the more anxious for this weekend.
With principal photography on the film started only very recently, it would be foolish for us to assume that we’d be seeing any actual footage of the “new” crew of the USS Enterprise. The folks over at JoBlo seem to think that it will be a little underwhelming, as they thought the teaser for Transformers was (I beg to differ)
I’m not going to chew up space on what HollywoodChicago reported, but I’ll include the snippet that I found most interesting
Huge overhead shot pans across [and] suddenly [shows] what looks like miles of scaffolding underneath.
Title: “The future begins”.
Really impressive shot from … people all over the ship and you can see a huge industrialized city or shipyard in the background. It’s being built on Earth [rather than] in space.
Neil Armstrong: “One small step for man…”
Camera slowly cranes up over the whole saucer section.
How the frak can the Enterprise be built on Earth? What happened to Space Dock? Arrrrrgh. A las, my frustrations will be allayed as I will finally get to see the most important cast member of Star Trek, the Enterprise herself. Until I can give you my first hand experience, I leave you with the trailer for the greatest of all Trek movies, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
The YouTube clip of the week has to be that “teaser” for JJ Abrams’ Star Trek that was initially touted as a leaked trailer. It didn’t take long for the powers that be confirm that it was in fact a fake, but a very good one at that.
Paramount has been rather busy thus far at Comic Con, more specifically JJ Abrams. During the Star Trek panel, Abrams confirmed that Heroes’ Zachary Quinto has been cast in Star Trek as Spock. He also revealed that Leonard Nimoy would be playing Spock. Huh?!? Just over a week ago I speculated that Nimoy would be coming back as Sarek, Spock’s dad. Very interesting.
Still no word about Kirk & Bones, but the Con is far from over …
Paramount & Abrams teamed up to unveil the latest one sheets for Cloverfield/1-18-08/Monstrous? & Star Trek. Both are uber cool and geeky. Click on each for a larger image. I’m digging both of them moreso the one for Cloverfield, uber creepy. Granted that Lady Liberty has taken quite a beating through the years in film (Independence Day, Planet of the Apes, X Men, Godzilla).
2008 is shaping up to be an impressive year at the movies. We’ll start the year with Cloverfield on 1-18-08 and close out the year with Star Trek on 12-25-08.
In all of my post-Transformers excitement I totally neglected an aspect of my theater-going experience. In the days leading up to Transformers, there were some rumors of which trailers would be attached to it. Some outlets were saying Iron Man while others were hinting at this super-secret project known as Cloverfield. At the time, the only thing I knew is that JJ Abrams was somehow involved.
The trailer absolutely blew me away. It was as effective as that Independence Trailer from the Super Bowl all those years ago. What we see in the trailer is some massive explosions, fireballs, oh and the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty. All we are left with is a date 1-18-08, which just so happens to be a viral website 1-18-08.com. Right now there are three uber-creepy snapshots that almost give you a 9/11 type feel.
There have been a lot of impostors on the Interweb trying to cash in on the viral marketing craze. It has incensed some people, most notably the folks over at /Film. They have decided it is their prerogative to destroy any such impostor and annihilate them. By the way, /Film is very quickly becoming my go to movie blog. Less fanboy nonsense than the wildly popular AICN, which is always a bonus.
I can’t find any more information about this project, which is amazing due to the fact that there is this little series of tubes called the Internet. Most of the time I am able to get any information about any project instantaneously. The lack of information is fueling my need to see more from this mysteriously titled movie.
