The Walking Dead Officially Kicks Ass

By Jon, August 27, 2010 11:14 pm

At this point, I don’t think there is anyone who isn’t on board for this. I’m thrilled beyond belief with the casting and visual style that Frank Darabont brought to this project. I may have been skeptical initially about Andrew Lincoln’s casting as Rick Grimes; but this trailer has me absolutely sold … he is Rick Grimes.

When I have non-nerd friends asking me about the comic, asking if they can borrow some of my trades you can be assured that AMC will have a smash hit on their hands. The Walking Dead premieres Sunday, October 31st at 10:00pm.

Warren The Ape’s Bad Po Fo is Puppet Death Wish

By Jon, August 20, 2010 10:52 pm

Warren The Ape is the first show on MTV that I’ve watched since Sandblast. I find great joy in watching the trials and travails in the life of the sexually-addicted, alcohol-fueled, helmet-wearing simian.

In a recent episode, we find that Warren D. Montague has starred in a gritty war drama “Bad Po Fo”, which is perhaps the greatest Grindhouse-esque trailer I’ve seen it quite some time.

Masterpiece Grimlock Is Finally Mine

By Jon, July 26, 2010 7:00 pm

Of all the items in my Transformers collection there is one thing figure that I love above all others, my original G1 Grimlock. For a kid, Grimlock was just about the coolest thing ever in that he was a robot that turned into a dinosaur. Over twenty years I’ve held onto Grimlock through several house moves, high school, college, graduate school, and even marriage. I even have gotten my wife to engage in the “Cesium Salami/Beryllium Bologna” dialogue from Transformers: The Movie.

A year ago rumors were swirling that Hasbro has deemed the United States worthy of an American release of the Takara Tomy MP-8 Grimlock. This was huge news due to the fact that the Japanese version ran upwards of $150 and was very hard to come by. Over that year there were further rumors of cancellations and who would exactly be carrying this new Masterpiece Grimlock, as Toys R Us were initially slated to carry it. It wasn’t until earlier this month that we had confirmation that it would be a and that it would be a Toys R Us Exclusive and sold through Entertainment Earth during San Diego Comic Con.

My patience paid of late last week as I was finally able to pre-order Masterpiece Grimlock through TRU.com. Unfortunately he will take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks to arrive in my Den of Nerdery.

Odin Copped Ming The Merciless’ Interior Designer

By Jon, July 18, 2010 11:35 pm

/Film just posted a new set photo from Thor which ran in the print in the Los Angeles Times. One of my chief concerns in the photo of Odin, Thor, & Loki that was released last week was the lack of Loki’s trademark head wear.

With Kenneth Branaugh in the director’s chair I was sure that we would see Asgard presented in a grand scale, and this picture pretty much confirms my suspicions. Not only do we get to see Odin on his throne, but take a look in the foreground and you’ll see Loki looking well … more like Loki, and I am pleased.

My guess is that with all of the Asgardians in what seems to be ceremonial mode and Odin is passing judgment on his son Thor. The tone in this photograph seems ominious, and that coupled with the official synopsis my analysis seems legit.

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment present the epic adventure, “Thor,” which spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth), a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and is forced to live among humans. A beautiful, young scientist, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), has a profound effect on Thor, as she ultimately becomes his first love. It’s while here on Earth that Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Odin’s throne room look like it belongs in the 1980 classic Flash Gordon, which is a great thing. Flash Gordon had fantastic sets and production design, and as I alluded to last week Thor needs to work harder to sell the fantasy aspect in a pre-established Marvel Universe of more Earthly superheroes.

Captain Picard Is Coming To Wizard World Philly, And It’s Going To Cost You

By Jon, May 27, 2010 12:19 am

In just a few short weeks, Wizard World Philadelphia will be upon us. For the Star Trek fan in me, the lineup for this show looks pretty phenomenal as there will be representatives from The Original Series, The Next Generation, and Deep Space 9. They even booked the guy who was in the Gorn costume from ToS episode Arena. Obscure right?

Within the last week it was announced that none other than Sir Patrick Stewart would be in attendance. Let’s just get it out of the way and acknowledge that Jean Luc Picard is the greatest Captain ever to command the USS Enterprise. Case in point, his total badassery for the entire duration of Star Trek: First Contact

It’s a no brainer to get in line to meet Sir Patrick Stewart, right? Well I started doing my research to see what he charges for an autograph. I typically don’t like to go above the $25 mark. When you take into consideration all of the other costs associated with attending one of these shows you have to have a limit.

I started doing my research and found that Sir Patrick is charging $100 for a photo op. Now if Edward James Olmos was charging $60 last year for an autograph (which I passed on, despite my deep love for the actor and his work), there is no way Sir Patrick will be at a price that would be considered even remotely reasonable.

I understand a lot of non working genre actors/athletes/creators rely on the Con circuit to keep the bills paid (i.e. the dude who was in the Gorn costume). How does a guy who made $14 million for Star Trek: Nemesis justify charging the fans that price?

But you know what, Trekkies will still show up and wait in his line and gladly fork over the cash.

Finally, I Can Own The A-Team Van

By Jon, May 17, 2010 10:02 am

Count me in those who are moderately excited about this summer’s big screen adaptation of The A-Team. For me, my favorite part of any A-Team episode was when they made a tank out of pretty much any land based vehicle.

The most exciting aspect of the upcoming cinematic escapades of Hannibal & Co. has to be the toy line from Jazwares, Inc. Late last week MTV’s Splashpage got an exclusive look at the line, which includes 12″ Talking Figures, 3-3/4″ Figures, and yes a 3-3/4″ scale A-Team van!

While I give Jazwares, Inc. credit for capturing really good likenesses of the actors … all I really care about is that van, I will make it mine. After wich I will be assembling my own 3-3/4″ A-Team which consists of my in scale Captain America, City Strike Snake Eyes, Iron Fist, and War Machine.

DC Direct’s Batman Arkham Asylum Line Gave Me A Nerdgasm

By Jon, May 17, 2010 9:42 am

Earlier today, The Toy Ark published a scan they pulled from 4Chan which shows the initial lineup of Batman Arkham Asylum figures from DC Direct. Debuting in January 2011, we’ll be getting Batman, Harley Quinn, Scarecrow, The Joker, & Scarface.

batmanAA_ad

The advertisement is in black and white, which leads me to believe that we will see painted prototypes at San Diego Comic Con this July. And if the pattern for previous DC Direct lines fits, we should be looking at a $17-20 price point.

With another Arkham Asylum in the works, this property will surely be a hot property for DC Comics in 2011. I’m hoping Wave 2 will get us a Killer Croc or Jim Gordon, let the speculation begin!

The Greatest Nerd Shirt You’ll See All Day

By Jon, May 14, 2010 2:56 pm

As an avowed comic book geek, approximately 75% of my t-shirt drawer is full of nerdery. Part of the satisfaction comes from random shout outs in public places. My case in point, I was in Target today wearing a Flash shirt when an employee yells out “Barry Allen or Wally West?” Do I even have to answer? Barry Allen! After lurking in the toy aisle, I made my way over to the Men’s Clothing and was met with the most awesome Captain America t-shirt.

Not only do you get The Sentinel of Liberty, but a plethora of Silver Age Marvel Heroes as well: Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Power Man?!?!?! It’s rare to run across any merchandise that includes Power Man. I’m sure the designer had to be a fan of Heroes for Hire, because there is no rational explanation for Power Man’s inclusion in this epic t-shirt. All this excitement can be yours too for $7.99!

Bruce Campbell Brings The Awesome to Wizard World Philly

By Jon, February 23, 2010 3:41 pm

This summer will mark either the third or fourth time I will venture to Wizard World Philly. Last year’s show was pretty much shiat, which I have covered previously. While the show maintains a comic focus, the Wizard overlords have begun to shape it into an all-media convention.

WWP always had its glut of has been wrestlers (yes Virgil I’m about you). Last year saw a bigger “Guest List” and a significant reduction in floorspace for vendors and comic-related panels. 2010 appears to be no different, a guest list pumped up with people who will either cancel at the last minute or charge way to fucking much for an autograph i.e. William Shatner.

What really tickles my cockles is that the King, Bruce FUCKING Campbell is slated to appear on Saturday. Mentioning his name sends nerds, geeks, and cosplayers alike into a froth. Now should I be excited about The Shat, hell yes but I’m not paying $200 for him to sign an 8×10. If there is any bright spot to this upcoming show, this would be it. Hail to the King baby!

There are very few people I can watch in anything, and Bruce Campbell is among them. I’m sure it will be pandemonium on that Saturday, being that is the ONLY day he will be appearing. I’m sure there will be a panel stuffed with smelly fanboys in the cards.

Mego Style Benjamin Linus Will Try To Kill You In Your Sleep

By Jon, February 4, 2010 5:28 am

Last summer at San Diego Comic Con, Big Bang Pow! unveiled their line of the action figures from the hit series LOST. The prototypes were very impressive and excited a good number of LOSTies (myself included). Finally, after the lackluster McFarlane line, we would be getting a properly designed and articulated collectible line.

A couple of days ago, Big Bang Pow! announced that for several of their licenses: Venture Bros., Flash Gordon, Dexter, The Big Lebowski, and LOST would be getting the Mego treatment. Remember those cloth action figures with the big plastic heads from the 70’s? Well that’s what were getting instead of the fantastic prototypes we saw last summer. This was all but confirmed by e-retailer Entertainment Earth indicated via their twitter feed that the prototypes we saw last summer at SDCC are simply that. This Mego line is IT, and I’ve posted some official pictures.

I wouldn’t be so bothered by this other than the fact that the sculpts on these LOST Megos are frightening. So scary looking that I’d be afraid that little Mego Ben would come to life while I’m sleeping and try to steal my breath like that Troll from Cat’s Eye.

If you are a braver individual than myself, head on over to Entertainment Earth where all of them are up for pre-order.
