Samuel L. Jackson is Nick Fury

By Jon, June 21, 2007 10:48 am

Moriarty from AICN is reporting that Samuel L. Jackson will be shooting some scenes on the set of Iron Man today … as Nick Fury. This news on such a level of badassery it is hard to find the words to describe it. It’s a cool move on Marvel’s part to finally establish a “movie universe”. My chief complaint about this Marvel movies is that you never hear about the other superheroes in the background. Sure there are brief passing comments, but nothing solid. Shit, in the Marvel Universe New York City is home to Daredevil, Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, Fantastic Four, and Iron Fist just to name a few.

You can thank all of the various studios that own the rights to each of the Marvel Properties. That is one reason why Marvel has decided to start funding their own movies to give greater control of their cinematic ventures. Iron Man will be the first of these self-financed flicks. Early last week it was announced that they have movies for Thor, Silver Surfer, and the Avengers in development.

Back to Fury. This won’t be the first time that Nick Fury has been on film. There was a horrendous made-for-TV movie with David Hasselhoff as an extremely off-canon Agent of SHIELD. Also, this announcment shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to the fanboys. Sam Jackson is actually the basis for General Nick Fury in the Ultimates Universe. His likeness has been used (with permission of course) for the entire run. I’m loving this news and I am looking even more forward to seeing Iron Man next summer.
