It Isn’t Christmas Until The LEGO Advent Calendar Is Mine

For the last three years usually around this time of year I make an trip to LEGO Store to pick up the newest edition of the Advent Calendar. This year the Advent Calendar comes in two flavors: CITY and Star Wars, I opted for the CITY theme.

Due to my line of work, the CITY Police are a favorite and I can’t simply deny 24 days of mini-figure related goodness.

LEGO City Advent Calendar: 7553 MSRP: $34.99

And for those Star Wars minded individuals, the calendar features mini ships and minifigs galore; however they will cost you a bit more (LEGO has to mark up the cost due to licensing)

LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar: 7958 MSRP: $39.99

If you plan on getting either of these sets, be sure to pick them up before Black Friday as they get rather scarce after that point. Also, go direct to LEGO to pick these up the markups at Toys R Us and Target are a bit on the ridiculous side.

Insta-Buy: Mark Welser’s “The Thing”

As an avowed fan of all things John Carpenter you can understand that there is a special place in my heart for The Thing. One of the greatest aspects of The Thing isn’t even in the film, but the glorious one sheet by artist Drew Struzan. It’s imagery is iconic within pop culture which has often been copied but never duplicated.

One of the things I love about Planet Pulp is that is a central repository for nerdy things I like, and artist Tim Welser knocked it out of the park with his poster for The Thing.

I know the thing right now that the craze within pop culture circles are limited edition poster prints for current and cult films. While I have yet to fully embrace that craze, I think that Mr. Welser is deserving of some much deserved love. This print and many of of his works are available in his Etsy Shop Team Welser.

2012: The Year The LEGO Group Empty’s My Bank Account

I have no shame in admitting that I’m a huge LEGO fan. I’m that guy in Toys R Us who feels out the packages of the Collectible Minifigs trying to figure out who is inside. I’m also that guy who grabs up at least one LEGO Advent Calendar every Christmas. LEGO is eternal, they don’t break or go out of style and I’ll be able to pass them along to my kids someday. But before that even happens, I will be enjoying some of the ridiculously awesome sets that the LEGO Group will be putting out next year.

First up is the new Batcave. Back at SDCC, it was announced that LEGO had signed a deal with DC & Marvel to produce superhero themed sets. Batman is no stranger to LEGO as recently as 2006 had a full line dedicated to him. I’m loving the details here, which will include a quick change feature with a Bruce Wayne minifig, and I’m absolutely loving Bane’s Drill/Tank thing.

And due to my line of work, I’m particularly drawn to the LEGO City theme which always incorporates a police sub-theme. 2012 is a little different with the introduction of the Forest Police, which brings us ATVs, campaign hats, sweet-ass helicopters, and bears!

The Forest Police station will be on my list, but I’m sure reality will settle in and choosing between the water bill and plastic crack will prevail.

Between the DC/Marvel Superhero theme and the pleasant surprises within City, the LEGO Group is going to do a number on my wallet.

The Thundercats Are Loose & Entirely Awesome

I have been following the development of Cartoon Network’s revamp of Thundercats since it was announced early last year. I was initially worried about the anime-inspired designs that the new series employed. I’m relatively confident that even the most ardent fans would agree that the original cartoon has not held up well over time, the modern reinterpretations are a welcome injection into the Thundercat mythos. Aided by gorgeous animation and a stellar voice cast including Will Freidle (Batman Beyond) as Lion-O, Emmanuelle Chriqui (Entourage) as Cheetara, and Clancy Brown (Superman: TAS, JLU, Highlander), and the original Lion-O, Larry Kenney as King Claudus.

Thundercats (2011) pays homage to it’s origins, while fleshing out the characterizations in a bit more adult tone. Gone are the “standing in a circle and laughing at Snarf at the end of each episode” bit. The hourlong premier brought us to Third Earth where the Thundercats are the most powerful species on the planet, having subjugated the lesser canine and lizard species.

Generally, the Thundercats are kind of dicks and Lion-O recognizes that and does what he can before he ends up in a couple sticky situations where he is backed up by the mysterious Cheetara and his bastard half-brother Tygra. I won’t go into the major spoiler territory; but before the first hour is up we see betrayals, the Lizard Men, Mumm-Ra, and Lion-O taking the first steps as the new leader of the Thundercats.

Marvel Marketing Team Up: Captain America & Dunkin Donuts

If you haven’t had the chance to see Dunkin Donuts’ promotional tie in with Captain America: The First Avenger you are missing something pretty cool. I’m usually wary of the various marketing tie ins with superhero movies, but this one is actually pretty entertaining.

This elaborately well done commercial is shilling a special edition Cherry Coolata, because we all know that Captain America runs on Dunkin and not Dr. Erskine’s Super-Soldier Serum.

Planet Pulp Celebrates Your Favorite 1980s Action Heroes

Strange things happen on the Internet late at night. Often times the things I discover are not meant to be seen and quite frankly they can never be unseen. However, one night I would up on a little blog called Planet Pulp. What is Planet Pulp exactly?

We are an Intergalactic Online gallery on a mission to orbit a pulp-culture theme every 30 days. Here you will discover a collection of talented rogues bound together by sheer awesomeness, illustrating and designing monthly themes as we celebrate our shared love of Pulp Culture!

For the month of June they are celebrating the 1980s action hero; and they are touching on everyone from Robocop to Aliens’ Ellen Ripley. They contributions come from all over from very talented artists and illustrators. What caught my eye was some of the truly fantastic art inspired by John Carpenter’s films like Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, and Escape from New York.

As a gigantic fan of Big Trouble in Little China, I’m absolutely gushing over the first piece from artist Dave Stokes. It keys in on one of my favorite scenes from the movie. If at this point you haven’t added Planet Pulp to your blogroll you better get on it you aren’t going to want to miss what they have in store for July.

Winter is Coming (At TeeFury)

I first got turned on to the greatness that is TeeFury in September 2010 when they released Plastic Heroes, and in that time it has become one of my favorite Internet destinations. I really do get a kick out of the concept of the limited edition shirts available for sale only for 24 hour. I take great pride when I get comments from my TeeFury shirts, knowing full well that they are no long available.

TeeFury’s release for today, is a shout-out to my favorite of the Great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, House Stark. Bearing their sigil of the Direwolf and the family’s words “Winter is Coming”.

TeeFury - Winter is Coming

As with all of their releases, Winter is Coming is available only for 24 hours. As of this posting you have 21 hours to pick it up. With the popularity that Game of Thrones is enjoying I wouldn’t be surprised if more shirts inspired by the books and television series find their way onto TeeFury in the future.

Viserys Got The Gold But The Leprechaun’s Still In The Tree

I can’t even begin to elaborate on how genuinely awesome Game of Thrones has been so far. Up until recently I had no exposure to George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice & Fire series, or literary fantasy in general. I’m all in at this point having recently finished the second book in the series this past week. While some liberties are being taken as far as the pacing and structure in an effort to adapt a 700+ novel into 10 one hour episodes; the casting and characterizations are spot fucking on.

After the first episode of Game of Thrones aired, my Dad called me to tell me how much he enjoyed watching it. I got him up to speed on the major houses of Westeros and filled in some gaps for him. One thing he mentioned off the bat was how much of a prick Viserys was. I assured him that his comeuppance would be entirely appropriate.

Well, nothing like ending a tremendous episode by having a giant Klingon like man that is Khal Drogo pouring molten gold on top of the head of Viserys, giving him his crown and effectively ending the life of his treacherous and devious brother in law.

Shockwave Seems A Bit Angrier In Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Anyone who is even remotely familiar with the Transformers (Generation 1) incarnation of Shockwave, can universally agree that he was useless. In the first episode, he was ordered by Megatron to stay behind on Cybertron and babysit the planet while the Decepticons attempted to defeat the Autobots. Shockwave made sure nothing got too dusty, but did eventually help construct a Space Bridge.

Yahoo! Movies was first to debut this new banner ad for Transformers: Dark of the Moon depicting a significantly more badass Shockwave in the midst of a destroyed cityscape.

Leonard Nimoy Returns To Transformers As Sentinel Prime

After a two month hiatus what greater news to come back to than that of Leonard Nimoy voicing an Autobot in Transformers: Dark of The Moon. Nimoy is not a newbie to the Transformers mythology. In the 1986 animated film Nimoy voiced the Decepticon Galvatron (who was in fact a reformatted version of Megatron).

According to Entertainment Weekly he will be voicing Sentinel Prime:

the predecessor of Optimus Prime whose wrecked body is seen in the teaser trailer, found crash-landed on the moon by the Apollo 11 astronauts in 1969. Later, after being brought to earth, he takes the disguise form of a fire engine in the movie’s massive, climactic battle through Chicago.

I’ll stop there for I have a great fear that my head will explode by the merging of my two favorite properties, Star Trek & Transformers. Michael Bay has once again proven that he is awesome.
