Okay Guys, Even Joss Says There Are No Skrulls In The Avengers

This weekend at SXSW, The Avengers director Joss Whedon put all the rumors to rest regarding the “big bad” we will be seeing once the Earth’s Greatest Heroes unite in multiplexes this June.  During the course of the panel, “A Conversation With Joss Whedon” the director went to point out that neither the Skrull (or Kree) will be seen.  He pointed out that

The Skrulls — they can shape change. That’s a whole thing,” he said. “I’ve already got Loki. He’s got magic. Once you got magic along with your Iron Man and your Black Widow — it’s a real juggling act.”

Whedon also pointed out one of the big problems of involving an alien species like the Skrulls is that they have such a rich mythology on their own.  He wouldn’t want to shoehorn them in (i.e. Galactus in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.)

Those two aliens are Marvel mainstays and have enormous backstories … they have a big life of their own that just could not be contained in a film where I already had seven movie stars

I for one am a little relieved, although if this holds true my wild speculations and musings will have been found to been wholly inaccurate.

Since I read this I went back and review the latest trailer for The Avengers, and I’m really going to go with the magic angle.  We have Loki on Earth, messing with the members of the group turning them against each other.  When that won’t work … he brings some Asgardian magic/tech to reign death and destruction.  But again, this is all speculation and Whedon could just be throwing us off in the build up to May 4th.

Have You Seen The Planet Hulk Trailer Yet?

The animated adaptation of Greg Pak’s highly acclaimed Planet Hulk story arc will be premiering on DVD February 2010. The trailer first premiered last weekend at San Diego Comic Con, and from what I can tell the buzz appears to positive.

There have been several instances here on DDOY where I’ve confessed my undying fanboy love for Mr. Pak for his work on both Hulk, Skaar: Son of Hulk, and Incredible Hercules. Understandably, I have a lot of hopes riding on this and from this tiny glimpse it looks spot on.

I certainly enjoyed Marvel’s last animated endeavor, Hulk Vs., but they still have a lot ground to catch up to DC’s animated efforts; which have been phenomenal (with the exception of Gotham Knight … that absolutely blew).

What Is Marvel Doing To Hulk?

I wasn’t a big Hulk fan until Pak went all Russell Crowe with him on the planet Sakaar during the Planet Hulk story arc. It was a story that was brilliant and made many guys like me wonder why they hadn’t done something similar before.

Now post World War Hulk, which somehow went unnoticed during the rest of the Post-Civil War & Pre-Secret Invasion Marvel U … Hulk has been taken over by Jeph Loeb (he of shitty Heroes fame, as well as Batman: The Long Halloween) and Ed McGuinness (Superman/Batman).

The story is meh … there’s a mysterious Red Hulk that could be Doc Samson and he’s beating the shit out of the world’s greatest heroes outside of San Francisco (and the Moon). Isn’t there a Skrull invasion somewhere? Anyway, what I’m getting at is McGuiness’ Hulk … is it just me or is his Hulk … shitty?

Ed McGuiness' Hulk Sucks

I think Thor summed it up pretty succinctly.

DDOY Review: The Incredible Hulk

Let me start this review by saying that Marvel Studios is 2 for 2 in 2008. It’s amazing what they’ve been able to do with two of their marquee properties when they have creative control in the movie making process.

Incredible Hulk: REVIEW

There was clearly an apprehension on Marvel’s behalf on how to market this film due to the behind the scenes controversy and they weren’t necessarily sure how this would fare after the lukewarm reception the Green Goliath had in his previous cinematic outing. Those fears can be allayed as I can confidently say that The Incredible Hulk was a kickass comic adaptation.

Like Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk worked so very well because of it had an exceptional lead and supporting cast: Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, William Hurt, and Tim Roth. It also worked because the director, Louis Letterier, has a true fanboy obsession with the classic television series and really did his best to set his film in line with the character that many fans and non-fans alike are familiar with: the loner in search of a cure.

This is a movie that can bring in new fans and was littered with easter eggs for the fanboys. It was clear that more of our gamma-powered friends would be around in the sequel(s), like Doc Samson & The Leader. The one thing that I would say is that the Abomination while does not look like the comic counterpart, it absolutely works in the context of the movie. You’ll see.

Overall, another fantastic trip into the Marvel Movie universe, a 4 out of 5 on the DDOY Scale. Go see this and skip that shitty M. Night Shyamalan movie. The bar has been set high, and I hope that Marvel will be able to maintain this across the numerous projects in the pipeline.

The Incredible Hulk, Now With A Dash of Tony Stark

I know I’ve been hitting you all over the head with Incredible Hulk trailers in the last couple of months, but I couldn’t help posting the most recent TV spot which oddly enough starts out with Tony Stark (probably due to the success of Iron Man). Now we just need to figure out what’s going on with this supposed Captain America cameo.

We all know that Robert Downey, Jr. filmed a cameo, but I found it a little surprising that he’s featured so prominently. Who cares, I’m heading out to see it this Friday broken foot be damned!

Hulk Smash Puny Interweb With New Trailer

With Iron Man just mere days away, I guess Marvel decided to finally put a new trailer for The Incredible Hulk out on the Interwebs.

Caps from The Incredible Hulk Trailer

This new theatrical trailer delves a little bit into what Bruce Banner has been doing since the previous movie, which has pretty much been evading the US Military in the far reaching corners of the globe … while working on a cure for his big, green alter ego.

Despite the fact that very little has come out about this movie, I’m absolutely stoked for the coming summer movie season. Regardless of what the fanboys might say, The Incredible Hulk has a built in fanbase … and will do better … much better than it’s predecessor.

You can check out the trailer over at Apple … and if you pay close attention you can hear the “Sad Hulk” theme from the old television show (or at least, it sounds like it to me).

The Incredible Hulk Trailer Is Live

Earlier this evening, the first trailer for the Incredible Hulk went live on MTV and all over the Interweb. Hyperbole aside, I am jazzed for this flick. It’s been under the radar for the most part, despite the star power that it has attracted.

The trailer is well done. For the most part, you really don’t know that this is a Hulk movie until the last few seconds. There was defintely more Bruce Banner than Hulk in this one, and looks to be a pretty interesting take on the character.

Your thoughts? Fanboy reactions? The Hulk looks good, probably around 12′ tall not nearly as huge as he was in Ang Lee’s Hulk … which if I remember correctly was somewhere around 20′ feet. I’m not sold on Abomination, as he just looks like a cross between Swamp Thing and that Xenomorph/Human hybrid from Alien Resurrection.

June 13th people. See you in line.

So The Incredible Hulk Teaser Gets A Teaser?

With the release date for the Incredible Hulk just 3 months away, we have yet to see anything (aside from some promo art) on the good old Interweb. /Film was the first (at least I found it there first) to post an MTV teaser for the debut of the full Incredible Hulk teaser; which will premiere on MTV at 9:56pm before some shit fest reality show.

So without further adiue, the teaser for the Incredible Hulk teaser …

Am I excited? You bet. Edward Norton is a pretty serious dude, and his involvement definitely elevates ones expectations for the film. What concerns me the most is that this is the first actual footage that we’ll be seeing. We’ll just have to wait until Wednesday before we form any judgements … but then we wouldn’t be good fanboys now would we?

Which Movie is Most Deserving of My Fanboy Ire?

With Transformers being the main focus here on DDOY for the last year, I’ve found myself without a specific movie/project to get behind. As a fanboy, I feel obligated to second-guess and openly criticize someone whose abilities and vision eclipse that of my own. I’ve generated a list of potentials movies with release dates this year.

Iron Man [May 2, 2008] – I’ve been all over this for quite sometime, and have made public my undying love of the work that Director Jon Favreau has done thus far. However, with mere months before release … I may not have enough time.

The Incredible Hulk [June 13, 2008] - Other than some concept art and shirtless pictures of Edward Norton very little is widely known about this project. Hopefully, Marvel will remember that they are releasing this movie in a few short months.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army [July 11, 2008] – Guillermo Del Toro has been on a tear of late. Pan’s Labyrinth was easily the most terrifying yet visually stunning movie I saw last year. It wasn’t until recently that I got into Mike Mignola’s Hellboy books and was stunned as to how accurately Del Toro nailed the look and feel of Big Red and his team at the BPRD. BONUS: Selma Blair is wicked hot.

The Dark Knight [July 18, 2008] – This is a no brainer, but I don’t think I could do anything to help this movie get any more press that it already has … I mean Heath Ledger did take care of that now didn’t he? Batman Begins was damn near perfect, and I have complete faith in the sequel.

X Files 2 - [July 25, 2008] – Um, there’s an X Files sequel coming out this year? Not much is known about this movie, and as someone who watched the show regularly from Season 4 on … I was stunned when they had a panel at WonderCon a couple of weekends back. Very little is known about the plot other than it won’t necessarily deal with the alien conspiracy as seen in the first feature, X Files: Fight The Future. Lots or rumors, but nothing substantial … and has it been too long to motivate the legions of fanboys?

So, those of you out there in DDOY-land … what are you most looking forward to in 2008?
