DDOY Review — Iron Man 3

After the credits rolled in my sold out 6:20PM showing last night for Iron Man 3, I have to say that I’ve never been more proud of myself of staying spoiler-free for a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.  In what I consider Robert Downey Jr.’s finest outing as Tony Stark, the big (and even the subtle) reveals are genuinely exciting, and completely unexpected based on the marketing for the film.

With Director Shane Black at the helm (who also co-wrote) there is in fact more Tony Stark “man of action” than Iron Man through the first two acts of the film, which carries us up to the huge reveal about The Mandarin and his nebulous terrorist organization.  There are things that I absolutely loved about Iron Man 3, while there are some nitpicks that I’ll discuss after the jump.  BE WARNED — Spoilers From This Point Forward –

Remember When Captain America Defeated Evil With Hostess Cupcakes? Of Course You Don’t

One of my new favorite pastimes is scouring through comic books of yesteryear in search of the most ridiculous advertisements.  Within the pages of Iron Fist #13 from June 1977 I may have uncovered the greatest one yet in which Captain America does battle with the Sore Sir’s Apprentice.

Captain America & The Sore Sir's Apprentice

Behold! Captain America has been thrust into a confrontation with a plethora of monsters from the laboratory of a wizard known at the Sore Sir.  Being that I’m rather well versed in Captain America’s gallery of villains, I could not find any canonical reference to Sore Sir even after utilizing the power of the Internet.

Captain America vs. The Sore Sir's Apprentice #2

Outnumbered and exasperated, Captain America who along with possessing super human strength and near invulnerability is an expert tactician.  After making a threat assessment he found that his only recourse was to pull out some Delicious Hostess Cupcakes, which are immediately recognized by the Sore Sir’s Apprentices

Captain America vs. The Sore Sir's Apprenctice #3

And these Hostess Cupcakes were so fucking good that the Sore Sir’s Apprentices swore of their allegiance to their evil wizard master.  Captain America must act quickly now that the Apprentices were distracted by the chocolaty cream filled goodness, springing into action he restrains them and begins a “lesson in citizenship”. The Apprentices seems okay with this turn of events as they really, really liked the Hostess Cupcakes.

A fair amount of research went into this review/analysis of Silver Age advertisement and I urge all of you to not Google Sore Sir’s Apprentice … because you will be taken to a website where you can order amateur BDSM porn that’s produced in a basement somewhere in New York City.  And after this post gets published, I’m sure that StationHouse Video Distribution is going to wonder why they are getting an uptick in traffic on a cold February night.  But hey, if you are into genital mutilation just go ahead and click through.

Sightings — 1993 Kool-Aid Wacky Warehouse Advertisement

While perusing Fantastic Four #375, which is by far one of the most “nineties” issues that Marvel Comics ever put out.  Of course it has the requisite foil cover featuring a Mr. Fantastic wielding a ridiculously large rifle and Susan Richards suddenly is wearing a uniform with a “4″ shaped boob cut out.  The 1990s were so EXTREME!

I didn’t make it past the front cover when I came across this truly awesome advertisement for Kool-Aid’s Wacky Warehouse promotion.  It really took me back to a time where everything was neon and Trolls, Koosh Balls, and Super NES were the in fact, the shit.

DDOY Delayed Review: The Amazing Spider-Man

I did not rush out to see The Amazing Spider-Man in theaters during its initial release, but apparently enough people did to warrant nearly $700 million in ticket sales and a sequel.   I tried to like this movie, I really did … but in the end it came across as a petulant money grab from Sony.  But last weekend I found myself with a free Red Box rental code … and figured “why they hell not?”

The Amazing Spider-Man was billed as the “untold story of Spider-Man’s origin” which was annoying and completely unnecessary.  Back during its release, some enterprising denizens of the Interweb were able to put together the pieces from trailers and other released promotional material of this ‘untold origin’ that never made it to final cut.  At one point my wife turns to me and says, “I feel like I’ve seen this movie before’ and she’s right … we all have.

Overall, The Amazing Spider-Man was a hackneyed, disappointing and ultimately unnecessary movie.  While there was some really neat visuals, they did not make me forget that I really enjoyed seeing this movie in 2002 when Sam Raimi directed it.

Sony Doesn’t Want You To Forget About The Amazing Spider-Man This Weekend

Sony has released the trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man online just in time for it to run ahead of The Avengers in theaters this weekend.  I’ll be honest, between The Avengers and The Dark Knight … I’ve kind of forgot about this one.

This trailer has some new footage, mainly of bad guy The Lizard (in his lab coat even!) and what appears to be a glimpse of the “final battle”.  I must admit, this trailer definitely has me interested despite two major misgivings I have about this film.

The first being that I’m still not sold on the look of the suit, it’s too modern for my liking.  The second item being that I’m not a big fan of this “we’re telling the untold story” angle.  Look, we know it’s a reboot so just call it a reboot.

Overall, I think it looks pretty darn entertaining and I’ll be willing to give it a shot once it hits theaters July 4th weekend.

Mondo Reveals Black Widow & Hawkeye, Bank Accounts Immediately Weep

Apparently Mondo, purveyors of super cool and limited edition movie posters will be releasing a series of 7 posters related to The Avengers.  They revealed the characters posters of Black Widow by Olly Moss and Hawkeye by Tom Whalen.

I’ve pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I will never be able to obtain a Mondo print at the time of the release (I came *this* close during their Planet of the Apes series).  As much as I love the work of the artists, I can’t bring myself to pay the huge markup on the secondary market.

As always, the posters will be going up at a random time which will be announced on Twitter.  Black Widow goes on sale April 19th and Hawkeye will follow on April 20th.  Both are priced at $45 and the runs are extremely limited.

Despite my previous bouts of bad luck, I will be making an effort to pick up Hawkeye.  Tom Whalen is a favorite of mine, a local guy who I’ve bought various pieces from over the years at different conventions.  I just love the composition and the color palette.

Holy @%$^ There’s Going To Be An Iron Fist Lego Minifig

As recently documented on my Twitter feed, Mrs. DoubleDumbass thwarted the street date restrictions at our local Target and obtained Captain America’s Avenging Cycle LEGO set for me earlier in the week.

With other LEGO Avengers sets starting to show up on store shelves ahead of the April 8th release date, scans of the catalogs featuring future Marvel LEGO releases.  And HOLY SHIT THERE’S GOING TO BE AN IRON FIST MINIFIGURE!!!

I was completely unaware that a Spider-Man set would be forthcoming, but there is no way in hell I will be passing up an opportunity to own a mini Iron Fist.  There are few characters int the Marvel Universe that I truly love more than the Immortal Iron Fist.  So after celebrating the rebirth of your Lord & Savior Jesus Christ this Easter Sunday … head to your local big box store and grab up some Marvel LEGO!

In The Latest Avengers Trailer, Hulk Smash

That’s it.  With two words I’m totally down for The Avengers.  I’m really liking the tone they are setting with these new trailers, and I’m very impressed with the CGI Hulk renders.  It looks as though third time might be around for the big green guy.  Also, I would like to take this time to acknowledge that I may have been hasty on calling for Skrulls … I now subscribe to the Krobonite Theory, but again I may be wrong.
