Black Panthers Make Voting Easy In North Philadelphia

Apparently the Black Panthers went out of there way this morning to provide “security” for one polling location in West Philadelphia. One intrepid UPenn student got this story started with a camera phone. I had no idea that the Black Panthers will still active … and more importantly that those sweet berets and night sticks are standard issue at 9:00 in the morning.

Oh and Fox News totally ran with this news story. Poor Rick Levanthal almost got his ass kicked …

Isn’t democracy grand?

LEGO Awesomeness Comes To Philadelphia (Area)

You know what’s awesomer than LEGOs? Absolutely nothing. They were (and still are) my favorite toys of all time. Countless hours of my youth and adulthood were spent building elaborate LEGO models. I was a huge fan of their Castle & Pirate lines, and most recently I’ve been all over their Batman line. I vividly remember getting the entire Castle line for Christmas 1988 and spent the entire week building every set with my pops.

LEGO STORE OPENS AT KING OF PRUSSIA IN SEPTEMBER!

Anyway … I’m a little late on this one but there is a LEGO Store opening up in September at the King of Prussia Mall. For those of you who have never been to one LEGO Stores, are quite frankly the balls. They have exclusive sets and wrap around walls full of every possible LEGO brick made. A firm date hasn’t been set yet, but as soon as I hear one I’ll be sure to pass it along.

City Hall Doubles As Paris, But Doesn’t Surrender

Philadelphia continues to be transformed as one of the filming locations for Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen (terrible pun intended). The latest news from the fansites as well as some Philly blogs are reporting that City Hall has been redressed into Parisan Cafe with Sam’s (Shia LeBeouf) parents (actors Kevin Dunn & Julie White) on location.

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen in Philadelphia

Shoots for TF2 are also set up for Eastern State Penitentiary, Rittenhouse Square, and the Richmond Power Plant. The locations are marked with yellow signs with “E7″ … so if you happen to see any of these signs in your travels, the Autobots will surely be nearby. And if any of you guys in the Philadelphia area snap any pictures, feel free to send them my way.

Oh and now that Transformers 2 is actively filming, the glut of Megan Fox pictures will resume

Dwight Shrute Will Battle Decepticons

Big news today in the blogosphere, Rainn Wilson … you know Dwight Schrute from The Office has been cast in Transformers 2. In an exclusive to the MTV Movies Blog, Wilson himself said that he’d be playing “A professor that turns into a car that turns into a robot,”.

Transformers 2 is ramping up as pre-production work is going on not to far away from me. They are prepping the old Bethlehem Steel site to be a Chinese factory of some sort. According the Transformer Live Action Movie Blog, they’ll be filming there from June 2nd through June 4th from 4p-7a. What’s even more exciting is Iron Hide has been spotted on a trailer heading into PA with some mysterious vehicles on the flatbeds as well.

I’m verrrrrry tempted to head up one of those nights to check out the scene, which will surely be full of explosions and His Bayness’ Awesomeness.

Transformers 2 WILL Shoot In Philadelphia

Remember the glee-filled post not to long ago where I cited reports that His Bay-ness was scouting locations in Philadelphia. Well my dream to be an extra in a major motion picture just became a reality. On KYW 1060AM, a representative from the city’s film office confirmed that in fact, Transformers 2 will be shooting here this summer:

Transformers 2 WILL Shoot in Philadelphia!

“Dream of the Romans” has been shooting. ‘Tenure”, “Happy Tears”, and “Marly and Me” are upcoming as is Transformers II. But won’t giant robots wreck the place????

“Ha, ha. Let’s just say the destruction part is going to be digitally enhanced.”

Otherwise, there goes the neighborhood.

With various sightings of Autobots & Decepticons taking place in California it’s clear that pre-production. There has been some casting leaks recently as well, and some Internet outlets are reporting that we’ll see the most fearsome of combiners … Devastator in Transformers: Part Deux.

I don’t lend much credence to that being that His Bay-ness has undertaken quite the disinformation campaign this go around. Also, it wouldn’t truly be Devastator as he was in the first movie (he was the tank), but was marketed in toy version as Brawl. But that’s just me the fanboy nitpicking … again.

Monster Jam Is The Balls

This past Sunday, Ashley and I had the distinct pleasure of attending our first NHRA Monster Jam at the Wachovia Spectrum in lovely South Philadelphia. We got the tickets for Christmas and everyone we told about them were like, “Monster Jam? Are you guys serious?”. Our Monster Jam was a genuinely fun one. As we pulled up to the Wachovia Complex, we were greeted by signs blinking “MONSTER JAM SOLD OUT” and event staff with bullhorns announcing the sellout. My initial thought was … how is that possible? Our seats were in Section 225 Row 13, which turned out to be 4th Row seats … due to the “Ring of Injury & Probable Death” that covered Rows 1-9.

Within minutes of the start the arena was filled with truck exhaust, dirt, and the rabid screams of the audience. Only once did it seem that one of these trucks was headed into the crowd, but even still everyone loved it. The highlight for me was getting to see Grave Digger crush some cars and do some jumps. Here’s a little video that I took with Ash’s digital camera, it really puts the scale of the arena into perspective and the sheer size of the trucks.

The highlight of the afternoon was watching Air Force Afterburner hit a jump and roll over. What truly amazed me was how quickly they got that 10 ton beast back on its wheels and drove it away. The complexity of the systems involved were interesting too, especially what the announcer called a Radio Ignition Interference unit which kills the engine remotely in the event of a driver getting knocked out. All of this effort in to what a good portion of America views as a redneck/white trash kind of thing. It was a genuinely fun time, and I would stack it up against any other sporting event that I have been to in my days. It’s way better than indoor lacrosse.
